OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES TRAINING COMMITTEE: REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS 

(Application deadline: March 31, 2006) 

The Outdoor Activities Governance Committee is seeking nominations for three 
members of one of its subcommittees, the Outdoor Activities Training 
Committee (OATC). 

The role of this committee is to oversee the development, implementation 
and evaluation of training programs for leaders in the Sierra Club's 
outings programs, including National Outings, Group and Chapter Outings and 
Inner City Outings. The training focuses on those skills and abilities that 
are common to Sierra Club Outings at all levels, including leadership, 
organization, conservation issue awareness, field skills, safety and first 
aid; with the ultimate goal of ensuring that participants on all Sierra 
Club Outings return from our trips safe, happy, and inspired to take some 
action in support of the Club's conservation issues. 

Candidates for this important oversight committee will be evaluated on the 
following combinations of skills and experience: 

A Sierra Club Member in good standing. 

Outdoor leadership experience with Sierra Club outings, at any level. 

Ability to work as a team member and communicate effectively within the committee and externally to leaders of the Club's outing community. 

Experience in developing and conducting adult training, preferably in training of outing leaders. 

Familiarity with web-based training. 

Ability to take initiative, follow-through on project assignments, and accept critique of your work. 

Access to E-mail and the World Wide Web, including basic skills to use the same. 

Access to basic word processing and office tools such MSWord and, PowerPoint , including basic skills to use the same are highly desirable. 

Attend one of the OLT Workshops to familiarize oneself with workshop practices. 

Willingness, ability to use OATC training materials to facilitate a training locally (to familiarize, beta-test, work with local group/chapter to implement training). 

The expected time commitment is about 2-5 hours per week, depending on project assignments, and one three-day weekend per year for a committee meeting depending on project assignments. There are monthly conference calls and specific project work, which may include program and site research, program evaluation, preparation of reports and newsletter articles, etc. Most of our work is done via e-mail. 

Appointment is a two-year term of office. Members may be re-appointed for a 
maximum of three consecutive terms.
