The new Integrated coal gasification plants end up
with a relatively inert byproduct which apparently can
be used as a paving material unlike the WWII plants
which ended up with carcinogenic coal tar as their
byproduct. They also emit less nitrogen and sulfur
dioxides than conventional coal plants. However unless
they sequester CO2 they still cause global warming.
