Below is a request for nominations for the Sprawl Campaign committee to be
circulated widely throughout the Club. The committee would especially like
it to be brought to the attention of chapter sprawl coordinators, if
possible. The CGC has approved this request and would like to have this
circulated right away in order to evaluate and appoint new campaign
committee members in time for them to make plans to go to the Airlie
planning meeting.

Many thanks for your help in getting this out.

Anne Ehrlich

NOMINATIONS - CHALLENGE TO SPRAWL CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE

In order to build on the successes of the Club's Challenge to Sprawl
Campaign, the Conservation Governance Committee (CGC) is seeking
nominations of volunteers to expand the Challenge to Sprawl Campaign
Committee. These volunteers will serve, along with continuing members of
the committee, for two-year terms ending in December, 2002.

While these are not exclusive criteria, the CGC is seeking candidates with

* Experience and interest in promoting affordable housing and developing
alliances with housing advocacy groups, or experience with community
economic development generally

and/or

* Individuals living in (and active in) the Northeast or the Texas/Gulf
Coast region.

Applications are due by October 20. Appointments will be made by the CGC in
late October. Appointees will be expected to attend a campaign planning
meeting December 1-3 near Washington, D.C. Appointees who have not taken
the Club's campaign training should plan to arrive early for this training
on
November 30th.

OVERVIEW

The Challenge to Sprawl Campaign Committee provides strategic and broad
policy oversight to the Club's national sprawl campaign. The campaign
committee determines strategy and makes decisions on tactical issues that
arise during implementation of the campaign. They decide the relative
emphasis on different parts of a campaign, within the limits of Board
priorities and the constraints of funding, and basic themes/messages. They
consider and propose future directions for the campaign. Members of the
Campaign Committee are participants in and leaders of the campaign, not
simply advisors to it. The committee includes assigned national staff as
full voting participants.

GOALS OF THE CHALLENGE TO SPRAWL CAMPAIGN

The external goals for 2000 have been, in brief:

* Pass one precedent-setting state smart growth initiative

* Establish and enact key provisions of a federal smart growth, anti-sprawl
agenda.

* Reform federal/state spending to promote cleaner, more efficient
transportation.

* Create a nationally visible campaign to promote smart growth and fight
against sprawl at local, state and regional levels.

APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS

Members of the campaign committees should have at least three years'
experience in developing strategy for conservation campaigns. Essential are
knowledge and understanding of the needs of volunteers and methods of
providing assistance and leadership for the grassroots and developing a
program that appeals to the general public. Applicants must be current
members of the Sierra Club.

Members are expected to:
* participate in a one- to two-hour strategy call every month, as well as
subcommittee calls.
* communicate regularly on e-mail
* have sufficient flexibility in time commitments to allow for full
volunteer participation.
* take on assignments involving advocacy, outreach, fundraising, or
materials development
* and may represent the program at Sierra Club national, chapter, or group
meetings, conferences, and meetings of other organizations

See the top of the message for the special areas of interest and expertise
that the CGC is currently seeking for candidates to expand the Sprawl
Campaign Committee

Current voting members of the Campaign Committee are:

Larry Bohlen (MD) and Tim Frank (CA), co-chairs
Ben Hitchings (NC)
John Holtzclaw (CA)
Bill Myers (CO)
National staff: Deron Lovaas (DC), Brett Hulsey (WI)
Chapter staff: Sandy Bahr (AZ)
Additional (national and chapter) staff and volunteers serve as liaisons.
