URGENT ACTION NEEDED
Thursday April 24, 2003
Call or email your Representative immediately and ask them to oppose Joint
Resolution 10 that would nullify the CAFO air quality rules for hydrogen
sulfide and ammonia that were approved by the Environmental Protection
Commission (EPC) this past Monday. These rules adopt ambient air quality
standards for these two toxic compounds to protect public health as
recommended by the joint Iowa State University and University of Iowa CAFO
Air Quality study completed last year. The rules approved by the EPC do not
implement all the recommendations of the CAFO Air Quality Study - acute
standards for hydrogen sulfide and ammonia were recommended by the study but
were not included in the EPC rules and the rules did not included air quality
standards for odor. However these rules are an important first step to
address the serious health problems experienced by neighbors of many large
concentrated livestock operations
We expect the House to debate this action today so call or email your
representative as soon as possible - calls are preferred to be sure you get
your message across. If this passes the House, it will go to the Senate
next, so if you have time contact your Senator also. We need to flood the
legislative switchboards!!!!
To find your legislator and get their contact information, go to <

switchboard at (515)281-3221 and the Senate switchboard is (515)281-3371.
