9/30/08 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Ryan Welch, program assistant, Tallgrass Prairie Center, (319) 273-3828 Rebecca Schultze, University Marketing & Public Relations, (319) 273-6728 Tallgrass Prairie Center presents second seminar in a series about natural resource research and management CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Justin Huisman, graduate assistant at the Tallgrass Prairie Center, will lead the second seminar in a series about natural resource research and management at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the Tallgrass Prairie Center at the University of Northern Iowa, located on West 27th Street, west of the UNI-Dome.Huisman will speak in Room 9 of the Tallgrass Prairie Center, about the effect of planting methods on seedling emergence and establishment in a tallgrass prairie reconstruction. Research in grainivory -- the selective eating of nutrient-rich seeds by herbivores -- has shown that improving seed-to-soil contact during prairie reconstructions will increase native seedling emergence and establishment. This study investigates the effects of various seed incorporation methods on prairie species emergence and establishment over two growing seasons. The four-part seminar series is sponsored by the Tallgrass Prairie Center.
