Note from Ericka -
Starlink is maybe the only Genetically Engineered corn variety that is NOT
approved for human consumption (because it contains the protein Cry9C).
Most GE'd corn varieties are legal for both human & animal consumption.

Keep in mind that every cell of a Bt GE'd corn plant is itself an
insecticide (EPA registered), and that Starlink is unusual in that it is not
only engineered with Bt, but also GE'd to be herbicide tolerent. So Starlink
corn plants are essentially living insecticides that release same from their
roots into the soil - where it remains viable for an extended period of time
after the plant is gone - and these corn plants are also able to survive
being doused with herbicides.

"There's more StarLink out there than anyone expected," said Anne
Bridges, a manager at Medallion Laboratories, a food-testing lab in
Minneapolis.

Subject: lawsuit filed against corn producers

LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST CORN PRODUCERS
September 18, 2001
Associated Press [via Agnet]
edited

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - According to this article, a class-action lawsuit
filed by thousands of Taco Bell restaurants and others Monday in Washington
County Circuit Court alleges, according to this story, that a group of
national and international corn and biotechnology firms acted together to
cause a collapse of the U.S. corn market, and seeks
millions of dollars in compensation and punitive damages.

Defendants include Aventis Cropscience USA Holding, a multinational
biotechnology company; Garst Seed Co.; Gruma Corp., the largest producer
and distributor of corn flour and tortillas in the United States; Azteca
Milling LP, another producer of corn masa flour; and other
still-to-be-discovered companies.

The lawsuit alleges the defendants developed, marketed and distributed
genetically altered StarLink corn and participated in fraudulent, deceptive
conduct that led to StarLink's use in hundreds of items that people eat.
