No More NAFTAs! Stop the Free Trade Area of the Americas!
"Fair Trade, Not Free Trade" Rally
Monday, October 13th, 4:30pm
Nollen Plaza, Des Moines

The Situation: Ten years of NAFTA has been disastrous for the United States,
Mexico and Canada. The U.S. has lost over 750,000 jobs, seen thousands of
family farms disappear and watched numerous environmental laws challenged in
secret tribunals. In Mexico, manufacturing wages have dropped 20% and
farmers have been forced off their land.

Despite this record of destruction, the Bush Administration is currently
seeking to expand NAFTA to the entire hemisphere. This would mean greater
unemployment, more environmental destruction and fewer family farms. We need
to stop the FTAA before it gets started!

Civic Action: Let's make clear to our elected officials and the candidates
running for President that trade deals that put workers and the environment
on the side are unacceptable! It's time to say "NO" to the FTAA!

Join us to welcome the "March to Miami" Bus Tour when it stop in Des Moines
on October 13th at 4:30. We will meet at Nollen Plaza downtown and express
our support for fair trade. The bus tour and rally stops are sponsored by
the United Steelworkers of America and the Alliance for Sustainable Jobs and
the Environment.

Miami Action: Trade ministers from throughout the Western Hemisphere will be
meeting on November 20-22 in Miami to continue negotiating the FTAA.  The
FTAA poses an even larger threat than NAFTA, opening the door to foreign
corporations privatizing our nation's public sector and attacking prevailing
wage laws and project labor agreements. Many civil society groups from
around North America are organizing events during this time. Stay tuned!
