SNOWMELT, RAIN LEAD TO CHARITON WASTEWATER DISCHARGE

CHARITON — Rapid snowmelt, paired with rainfall, has led to a wastewater discharge in Chariton.

The snowmelt and rain overwhelmed Chariton’s wastewater system, leading to a discharge from the 16th St. pumping station. The discharge began before 9:00 a.m. Monday and is ongoing. An unknown amount of wastewater has reached the Chariton River.

Because of ongoing high flows in its wastewater system, the city reports it will likely begin bypassing wastewater at its wastewater treatment plant to the river later today. The bypass is to prevent sewage, or wastewater, from backing up into homes and businesses.

The DNR has notified the drinking water system at Lake Rathbun downstream of the discharge. High flows in the river may help to dilute the discharge.
