AIR AND WATER ISSUES TO BE HEARD AT EPC MEETING SEPT. 18

DES MOINES - The Environmental Protection Commission will be asked to make
decisions on several water quality and air quality issues at its Sept. 18
meeting, scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Wallace State Office Building in Des
Moines.

Commissioners will be asked to make decisions on proposed rule changes that
adopt new national emission standards for hazardous air pollutants, update
public drinking water supply and laboratory certification rules, and to
approve the final rule of phase one updates to the water quality standards.

The department will present its FY 2002 budget to the commission.

Commissioners will be asked to extend a contract for consulting services to
ensure that sustainable building principles are integrated into the
planning phase for new construction or renovation of state buildings.

Another item on the agenda is an emergency underground storage tank rule
change allowing for the testing of methyl-tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) in
soil and groundwater to be discontinued at leaking tank sites when previous
sampling indicates MTBE is not present.

The meeting is open to the public and there is a public participation
period at 10:30 a.m.

The members of the commission are Terrance Townsend, Chair, Newton; James
Braun, Latimer; Kathryn Murphy, LeMars; Rita Venner, Breda; Rozanne King,
Mondamin; Gary C. Priebe, Algona; Darrell Hanson, Manchester and Randal
Giannetto, Marshalltown.  The interim director of the DNR is Lyle Asell.
