New Sierra Club Study Grades Largest Cities' Efforts to Use Public
Transportation to Cut Smog
A new Sierra Club report grades the nation's largest cities on their efforts
at using public transportation to cut air pollution. The report, which will
be released Tuesday in cities nationwide, grades fifty of the nation's
largest cities and analyzes the amount of smog created per person as well as
the amount spent on public transportation versus highways.
Cars today typically emit 70% to 90% less smog pollution per mile than their
counterparts of the 1960s, yet smog is still a serious problem. The report
highlights one of the main reasons pollution levels are not decreasing as
fast as desired (or in some cases are actually increasing).
