The Wild Planet Strategy Team (WPST) is establishing a Rivers Committee,
with
the charge and responsibilities as listed below.  We are seeking
individuals
with a history of work on rivers issues, and a demonstrated ability to work

within a committee.

RIVERS COMMITTEE MISSION STATEMENT AND CHARGE

Mission Statement:
The mission of the Sierra Club's Rivers Committee is to provide
assistance to volunteers in addressing river issues, build networks of
activists working on these issues, and coordinate the Club's conservation
efforts on these issues. River issues can include, but are not limited to:
hydro  re-licensing, riparian zone management, river restoration, dam
removal,
dredging, locks, wild and scenic river management and designation (both
state
and federal programs) and all related issues.

Charge:
In order to carry out the above mission the committee will:
1. Develop an activist network and facilitate information  exchange among
network members.
2. Keep network members informed on legislation and agency  policy matters
related to river issues.
3. Help develop and implement strategy to deal with river issues from
defensive and proactive positions as appropriate, including raising the
visibility of river issues in the Club.
4. Develop contacts with other environmental and citizen's  groups working
on river issues where such contacts would be helpful to activists  and
further the Club's agenda.

Committee Responsibilities:
The committee is expected to address river issues as delineated in the
committee charge and to report progress on its work through its committee
chair or WPST Liaison to the WPST. Committee members should not
advocate one narrow position, but evaluate all relevant information fairly
among all the differing viewpoints on any river issues addressed. The
committee shall have 6-8 members, plus a Chairperson, all appointed by the

WPST. Communication channels to the WPST are maintained through the WPST
Liaison  to the committee or by the committee chair. Funds to cover
administrative costs  of the committee will be provided by the WPST on a
reimbursement schedule. A  committee work plan and budget should be
submitted
to the WPST within one month  of formation. As appropriate, the committee
should establish liaisons with other Club entities, such as the WPST
Wildlife
and Endangered Species Committee, the Environmental Quality Strategy Team.

Personnel, financial, and other administrative matters should be
communicated
directly between the Chairs of the WPST and the Rivers Committee or their
designees.

The WPST will review progress on the committee's work at the end of each
year.
