***************ACTION ALERT****************************
TOMORROW, March 13, the Senate will take its first vote on CAFÉ
(corporate average fuel economy, or MPG) standards. The vote will be at
10:30 AM, so calls are necessary ASAP!
There are two competing proposals on the table, the Levin-Bond Amendment
and the Kerry-McCain Amendment. The Levin-Bond proposal punts the CAFÉ
decision to a federal agency which has failed to act in a decade to
raise standards, reducing 0 tons of global warming pollution. The
Kerry-McCain Amendment will raise CAFÉ standards to 36 MPG by 2015,
saving millions of tons of global warming pollution.
Senator Harkin’s support for a strong CAFÉ is wavering and calls to his
office critical to ensure he votes for the right ammendment. Tell
Senator Harkin that you oppose the Levin-Bond Amendment which would do
nothing to improve MPG standards and that you support the strongest
possible measures to make new cars more fuel efficient. To ensure our
health, a strong environment, and national independence from foreign oil
supplies we need to adopt modern standards and take advantage of
technological innovations to make new cars more fuel efficient.
# 1 priority--Senator Harkin (Des Moines) 515-284-4574
(DC) 202-224-3254
# 2 priority--Senator Grassley (Des Moines) 515-284-4890
(DC) 202-224-3744
