LOESS HILLS SPECIAL RESOURCE STUDY
Comment by September 4
If you care about the Loess Hills and have time to at least read part of the
study on the web, you can still send comments through next Tuesday,
September 4th, by e-mail. The report is fairly long but the most important
parts to read are the Executive Summary, the Conclusion of the Evaluation,
the Management Alertnatives and Recommendations.
The Draft of The Loess Hills of Western Iowa Special Resource Study and
Environmental Assessment is now available. A digital version of the Special
Resource Study is available for your reading at the following National Park
Service website: http://www.nps.gov/mwro/loesshills/
If you have trouble downloading these and would like me to send them to you
in text, let me know.

According to the summary, the National Park Service (NPS) has concluded that
the Loess Hills landform region contains resources of national significance.
It also found that the Loess Hills would be a suitable addition to the
National Park System.
However, the ownership pattern, size, multiple jurisdictions, threats, and
lack of comprehensive planning make designation as a unit of the NPS not
feasible. Five management frameworks for the long-term preservation of the
Loess Hills are identified and evaluated in this study.
Those who are interested in the future of the Loess Hills are encouraged to
review it at the website, and to submit comments on the recommendations.
