For immediate release: May 23, 2013www.iowadnr.gov | facebook.com/iowadnr | twitter.com/iowadnr | pinterest.com/iowadnr PUBLIC HEARING TO DISCUSS PROPOSED AIR QUALITY STRATEGY IN MUSCATINE MEDIA CONTACT: Jim McGraw, DNR, at 515-242-5167 or [log in to unmask] MUSCATINE — The DNR will hold an air quality public hearing June 24 in Muscatine regarding a state plan for fine particulate matter in the city. The hearing will begin at 2 p.m. at the Muscatine City Hall Council Chambers, 215 Sycamore St. Attendees can give oral and written comments on Iowa’s state implementation plan for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Muscatine. Fine particles 2.5 microns in diameter or smaller (PM2.5) have been linked to many cardiovascular and respiratory problems such as premature death, heart attacks, asthma exacerbation and acute bronchitis, as well as increased hospital admissions, doctor and emergency room visits, and school and work absences. In 2011, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that Iowa’s implementation plan was inadequate to maintain the 2006 24-hour National Air Quality Standard for PM2.5 in Muscatine. EPA’s finding required Iowa to revise the plan and include measures to attain and maintain the 2006 24-hour PM2.5 standard in Muscatine. The DNR collaborated with facilities in Muscatine to develop air pollution control measures that should quickly result in meeting the standard through reductions of ambient air impacts of PM2.5 emissions. Those not attending the hearing may submit written comments by 4:30 p.m. June 25, 2013. Send comments to: Jim McGraw, Department of Natural Resources, Air Quality Bureau, 7900 Hickman Road, Suite 1, Windsor Heights, Iowa, 50324. Comments may also be sent by fax to 515-242-5094 or via email to [log in to unmask] An electronic copy of the state plan is available at www.iowacleanair.gov. Click on Inside DNR, then Regulatory-Air. Next, select Stakeholder Involvement, followed by Public Input. The documents will be located under the Area or Company Specific Plans portion of the webpage. Paper versions of the document will also be available at Musser Public Library, 304 Iowa Ave. in Muscatine. Those planning to attend the public hearing that have special requirements, such as those related to hearing or mobility impairments, should contact Jim McGraw at 515-242-5167 to advise of any specific needs. The DNR will prepare a responsiveness summary, which will include written and oral comments received during the public participation process and the DNR’s response to the comments, following the close of the public comment period. The DNR will forward the completed responsiveness summary to EPA and will be available upon request. -30-
