The Obama campaign took over the coordinated campaign in 2008--GOTV was NOT run through the IDP. The Obama campaign, led by Jackie Norris in Iowa, was coordinating the phone bankers and canvassers and providing the scripts for them, which almost always mentioned no other candidates besides Obama. I know people who knocked on doors many weekends in 2008. They were working with scripts that talked ONLY about Obama.

It is not opinion, but a fact that the "drop off" between votes cast for president and votes cast for other offices in 2008 was much larger than in previous presidential election years in Iowa.

Wow-nice. Blame Obama for this. That's pretty weak-where's the crack Iowa Democratic party GOTV?

The "drop off" between Obama and votes for down-ticket Democrats was much larger in 2008 than in a typical election year. There are always some voters who don't vote all the way down the ballot, but in 2008 there were many, many people who showed up and checked only the box next to Obama's name. Most Iowa Democrats feel the Obama campaign GOTV operation was totally self-centered and not like the kind of "coordinated campaign" the Iowa Democratic Party tries to run. In Iowa House district 99 (Council Bluffs), I heard that 900 people voted only for Obama and didn't mark any other line on the ballot. That's just in one House district, where incidentally, Kurt Hubler lost by about 400 votes. Obama won my own district, House district 59, easily, but Jerry Sullivan lost by 93 votes.

Getting back to Steve King's territory, Democratic turnout in western Iowa was generally poor, because it wasn't a targeted part of the state for the Obama campaign. Although people talk about the huge general election turnout in 2008, the total number of votes cast in Iowa was about the same as it had been in 2004. Turnout was higher in some urban counties, but lower in many other counties.

Ron Hubler got 600 less vote than Oboma in Crawford County Iowa. Explain that. Ron was a Presbyterian Minister and a Navy Veteran . That alone should have gotten him votes.
