Hello to all of you!

As a trained NatureMapper, you have the opportunity to attend a newly
developed NatureMapping training workshop!

***On Saturday, February 9th, NatureMapping and the Iowa DNR Wildlife
Diversity Program will be hosting the **Level II Bird Training**
workshop at the scenic Des Moines YMCA Camp, located just north of
Boone, Iowa on the Des Moines River. The workshop will be 9am - 4pm.
Thanks to a REAP-CEP grant, the workshop (a $20.00 value) will cost you
$10.00 payable upon registration. A lunch will be provided. Read on to
learn more about this brand new workshop and how to sign up!***

I am excited to tell you of a new workshop that has been developed by
the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Iowa NatureMapping! We are
putting the finishing touches on what will be known as a **Level II**
workshop for trained NatureMappers. This workshop, **Bird Training**
for the lack of a more catchy title, will cover bird ID and monitoring
techniques specific to all birds, but also train you in several new DNR
volunteer surveys. These surveys include: **The Raptor Nesting
Survey**, **The Colonial Waterbird Nesting Survey**, and **The Peregrine
Falcon Survey**.

You all may be familiar with the recent Osprey and Peregrine Falcon
re-introductions around Iowa. In light of these, and the immense
nesting success that Bald Eagles are having in Iowa, the DNR is in need
of tracking the nesting success and/or potential nesting success of all
raptors, including those mentioned above. Colonial water nesters are
also important, in that they indicate the health of wetland and riparian
habitats, as well as overall environmental quality. These colonial
species, including the Great Blue Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron,
Double-crested Cormorants, and Great Egrets, are secretive nesters, and
much is not known of their nesting success in Iowa.

NatureMappers are a crucial component in the successful management of
these species. You can be a part of this exciting new experience,
working directly with the DNR on these special surveys!

This is a great opportunity to take NatureMapping to the next level,
work with IDNR staff, and brush up on your basic NatureMapping skills.

I hope everyone's holidays were full of enjoyment spent among family and
friends. I wish you all a healthy and happy new year!

Thank you and hope to see you at this training!

Jason O'Brien
