SATURDAY, JULY 7: Bison Ranch Visit
This day trip will be to Bob Jackson's Tall Grass Bison Ranch near
Promise City in southern Iowa. Bob treats the bison with respect and has a
couple hundred acres still unplowed and has also converted crop ground to
prairie grasses and forbs.

"Action" Jackson is a former Yellowstone National Park back-country ranger. Promise City is in Wayne County north of Hwy. 2 between Corydon and Centerville. Contact Jane at [log in to unmask] or 223-5047 for time and meeting place. We'll be leaving the Des Moines area about 9 a.m.

Earlier this year, an article about Bob's bison ranch appeared in Living
the Country Life magazine. The link to the article is below.

In May an ag class from a local college toured Bob's farm to learn of the
bison friendly corrals and sustainable herd management techniques. Also in
May, Bob hosted a film crew doing a documentary for the likes of Discovery
channel and public television. Their film will mostly be about the bison of
Yellowstone. But they wanted to include Bob's ranch because of his
philosophies and management for social family order (which comes as close to
Yellowstone's herd as possible).
