The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Announces a Public Meeting (July 6)
and Comment Period (July 1 - August 2) for the Ralston Superfund Site
Cedar Rapids, Iowa

The EPA is requesting public comment on the proposed plan for the Ralston
Superfund site, 228 Blairs Ferry Road, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The proposed
plan presents alternatives for cleanup of contaminated ground water and
soil and EPA's preferred alternative. EPA's preferred alnernative includes
restricting access to the site, maintaining the cap over the former
disposal area, and natural attentuation, which means the concentration of
contaminants in the ground water decrease naturally. The ground water will
continue to be monitored.

A 30-day public comment period on the proposed plan begins July 1, 1999,
and ends August 2, 1999. EPA has established an Administrative Record File
that contains site-related documents. The Administrative Record File is
available for public review at the Cedar Rapids Library, 500 1st St., SE,
Cedar Rapids, and the U.S. EPA Region 7, 901 N. 5th St., Kansas City,
Kansas, during normal business hours.

EPA invites you to attend a public meeting Thursday, July 6, 1999 at 7 p.m.
at the Cedar Rapids Water Department, 111 Shaver Road, NE Cedar Rapids,
Iowa. The meeting will provide the public with an opportunity to comment on
the proposed plan. EPA will not select the final remedy until all comments
received from the public during the public comment period have been
considered.

Questions about the proposed plan and written comments (post-marked no
later than August, 2, 1999) should be submitted to :

Diana Huffman
Community Involvement Coordinator
U.S. EPA Region 7
901 N. 5th St.
