INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE: REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS
The Conservation Governance Committee seeks to appoint three new members to
the Sierra Club's International Committee (IC). We are especially
interested in candidates with expertise and understanding in international
environmental issues.

IC members respond to and work on international environmental issues that
relate to national Sierra Club issues. To this end we maintain regular
communications with environmental NGOs around the world and meet with their
representatives, attend international environmental conferences, monitor UN
activities, assist other Club issue committees that do international issues,
and update the membership on international environmental issues, including
the deforestation in Latin America, the damming of rivers in China, ocean
noise and its effects on marine life, Cool Cities initiative, etc. Our two
priorities are to address international aspects of the Club?s Global Energy
Solutions work and to further Sierra Club engagement with China. An
individual who speaks Mandarin or Hindi and/or who is connected with the
Chinese or Indian communities would be a tremendous asset to the IC.

Service on the IC requires a genuine commitment of time and energy.
Selection of a new committee member will be based on several criteria,
including: relevant areas of interest and/or expertise; location;
willingness to work with other Sierra Club committees to create an
integrated approach to addressing environmental issues; commitment to remain
active on the committee for at least two years; ability to communicate
effectively orally and electronically, as well as participate in newsletter
production; and capacity to work both as part of a team and as an individual
activist (while remaining in contact with the committee for guidance and
agreement).

Ability and willingness to use electronic mail and to participate in
conference calls (generally in the evening) are required. Also, ability to
travel occasionally to meetings or conferences is helpful. (The IC generally
pays travel and lodging expenses.)

Appointments to the Committee are made based on applications and phone
interviews with prospective candidates. If you are interested in applying,
please read and follow the instructions completely. We are only accepting
self-nominations, so, please, pass this announcement on to others you think
may have an interest in serving on the International Committee. Nominees
must be current Sierra Club members.

Sierra Club of Canada (SCC) members are not eligible to apply to this
announcement. Please contact [log in to unmask] and/or refer to the operating
agreement between Sierra Club and Sierra Club of Canada at:
http://clubhouse.sierraclub.org/committees/international/US-Canada%20Sierra%20Club%20Operating%20Agreement-2003.pdf
for information on the criteria required for SCC members to be appointed as
liaisons or members to CGC and its subentities.

DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS: MAY 31, 2006
A copy of the completed application should be sent (email preferred):
Doug La Follette at [log in to unmask], Jan O'Connell at
[log in to unmask], and Kathryn Hutton at [log in to unmask]

For more information on serving as part of the, please visit the SC website
http://www.sierraclub.org/international/committee/ or contact Kathryn at
678-357-3051.
Current members of the IC are:

Barry Wulff, Chair
Michael Dorsey
Christine Elwell, UCIC liaison
Kathryn Hutton
John Klotz (final term)
Michelle Perrault (final term)
Lynne Simpson
Robert Smythe
Steve Stevick (final term)

In evaluating applications, the IC strives to achieve diversity in
geography, ethnicity, and gender, to build closer connections with
grassroots leadership (which means that current or recent-past Chapter or
Group leadership is a plus), to expand the Club's influence (which means a
demonstrated ability to communicate with and motivate people external to the
Club is a plus), and to increase our ability to communicate more effectively
within the Club.

INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE APPLICATION FORM
The subject line of the email containing an application should read "IC
application: [your last name]". This is to avoid the application being
disregarded because it appears at first glance to be another announcement.
The application should include:
· Name, address, phone(s), e-mail address, and best times to contact
· Sierra Club membership # and renewal date
· Sierra Club activities and leadership positions held, with dates
· Other relevant experience and qualifications
· Statement of interest in serving on the entity
· Names, phones, and e-mail addresses of at least three Sierra Club
references, including best times to reach them, one of which should be the
chapter chair.

All applications will be treated respectfully and confidentially. All
applications will be forwarded only to the parent entity along with the
recommendation of the search entity. The applications of those appointed may
be shared with current members of that entity. Exceptions to this must be
approved by the parent entity.
