My understanding from earlier this year was that Hyperion would approximately double South Dakota's GHG contribution, on the order of millions, not billions of tons. I suspect a typo in the article.

There are many good reasons to oppose Hyperion. I've seen some attention to toxic air pollutants, but no actual data, modeling, or predictions of these 187 chemicals. Many are carcinogenic, have effects on asthma and other respiratory conditions, & damage the environment such as through acidification of rain and soils.

If the plant could capture its methane and cycle it back into energy production, that would be a small step in the right direction.

Could the figure of 16.9 BILLION tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually be correct? Hyperion must be stopped. Jerry

Friends,

Didn't want you to miss this. story is in attached document or at Argus Leader website. http://www.argusleader.com/article/20101216/NEWS/12160317

Here is the story that appeared in the Sioux Falls Argus Leader about Hyperion's miscalculation on methane. Now the engineers admit twice as much methane will be emitted because of the coking process on tar sands/bitumen. Remember that Sierra Club in its lawsuit has maintained that Hyperion is missing tons of toxic emissions by ignoring the effects of flaring and other processes. As one person who commented on the story said: the lack of experience at the Dept of Environment Natural Resources and at the Hyperion end is beginning to show.

What is just as important is the description of next steps in the process. The water permit will be a key step in opposition. Public comments on each of the permits will occur.

Another concern is that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is posting news, but it seems difficult to find. Anyone find the DENR website with the methane announcement?

Jim Redmond
