THE FUND FOR ANIMALS UPDATE
August 13, 2002
EXOTIC PETS BILL INTRODUCED
Rep. George Miller (D-CA) has introduced HR 5226, the Captive Wildlife
Safety Act, to ban interstate commerce of lions, tigers, leopards,
cougars, and bears for the exotic "pet" trade. HR 5226 will help curtail
the practice of keeping these large, dangerous animals by private owners
as "pets." More often than not, owners are unequipped to deal with the
demands of caring for them, and the animals typically end up neglected
and suffering terribly. Many of the animals are abandoned or sold,
providing a steady stream of tame targets for trophy hunters at "canned
hunts." Take action at:

NEW FEDERAL BILL TO STRENGTHEN ANIMAL FIGHTING LAWS
Earlier this year, Congress passed strong anti-cockfighting legislation
as part of the Farm Bill, including a ban on the interstate shipment of
fighting birds and increased fines for federal animal fighting
violations. Although the Senate and House both voted for felony-level
jail time for animal fighters as well, this provision was removed from
the bill before passage. New federal legislation has been introduced to
remedy this. HR 5268 would amend the Animal Welfare Act to authorize
felony-level jail time for violations of the federal animal fighting
law. It would also ban the interstate shipment of sharp metal implements
-- knives and gaffs -- designed specifically to be used in cockfights,
and it would strengthen provisions dealing with seizure and disposition
of fighting animals. Take action at:

FUND ANNOUNCES TOP TEN STATES WITH THE CRUELEST CANNED HUNTS
The Fund for Animals has released a list of ten states that contain the
cruelest canned hunting facilities in the U.S. -- operations at which
wealthy trophy hunters can pay a fee for a guaranteed kill of a tame,
captive animal. The states making The Fund's "top ten" list are: Texas,
Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Ohio, Maine, Missouri,
Tennessee, and Louisiana. Read more at:

CLICK TO HELP ANIMALS AT THE ANIMAL RESCUE SITE
The Animal Rescue Site focuses the power of the Internet on a specific
need -- providing food for some of the millions of unwanted animals
given to shelters and sanctuaries in the US every year. Each click on
the "Feed an Animal in Need" button at The Animal Rescue Site provides a
bowl of food for an animal at one of the site's beneficiaries, including
The Fund for Animals' world-renowned animal sanctuaries such as Black
Beauty Ranch. Click here to help animals at no cost to you:
