Americans are driving under the influence of bad information. The actual
fuel economy of new vehicles they purchase could be up to 34 percent worse than
the autos' window stickers indicate. That's because the formula that the EPA
uses to calculate miles per gallon dates way back to 1985. Among other quaint
notions, it assumes a highway speed limit of 55 mph. With gas prices rising,
foreign oil increasingly volatile, and the threat of global warming, it is
essential the EPA stop using bad science and deliver accurate fuel ratings.
Urge EPA administrator Michale Leavitt at 202/564 4700 to change his agency's
calculation methods to show passenger vehicles' true performance.
From Working Assets Making your voice heard. Jerry Neff
