I've just learned that Zambrana Engineering, contracted by the Rock Island
District of the U.S. Army Corpsof Engineers is holding a Public Scoping
Meeting today, July 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. on the proposed lease application
by Muslim Youth Camps of America to build a summer camp/retreat/conference
sit at the former Camp Daybreak site on Coralville Reservoir. The meting
will inform people of the National Env Protection Act process, the proposed
lease, possible alternative uses and to solicit comments and concerns.
There have been some concerns about the magnitude of the proposed camp and
its impact on the land, shoreline and community. If you are able to attend
as a Sierra Club membr and simply identifiy yourself as such, please do.
While we have not taken a position, in part, pending this report, it is
important for the Corps and all involved to know that we are interested in
what will happen to the area.
The meeting will be held at Penn Elementary School Gymnasium, 230 N.
Dubuque Street in North Liberty. They also held afternoon session, which
just ended.
Unfortunately, I received mailed notification only today and cannot attend
(I've already contacted Zambrana asking for a more timely notification
process). I have requested a copy of the report by email.
Note: This is a personal e-mail account held
privately through the University of Iowa. It is
not a UI work account.
