ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE: REQUEST FOR NOMINATIONS

The Sierra Club's Environmental Quality Strategy Team (EQST) is seeking
nominations to fill three vacancies on the Sierra Club's Environmental
Justice Committee (EJC). We are especially interested in candidates with
experience, expertise, and/or a strong interest in the following
areas: Sacred Lands; civil rights; anti-racism training; border
issues; broadening support within the Sierra Club for environmental
justice; environmental justice implications of issues such as
transportation, sprawl, toxics, affordable housing, waste, Safe Hometowns,
& Superfund.

Service on the EJC requires a genuine commitment of time and
energy. Activists who are already over-committed--as many of our best
leaders are--may have to give up some of their current commitments in
order to serve effectively as a Committee member. For a better idea of
the work we do, please review the description of the SC EJC and the list
of qualifications for appointment that precede the application form
below. Nominees must be current Sierra Club members.

Selection of a new committee member will be based on several criteria,
including: enthusiasm for environmental justice activism; relevant areas
of interest and/or expertise; location; willingness to create an
integrated program of environmental justice in the Sierra Club; commitment
to remain active on the committee for at least two years; ability to
communicate effectively orally and electronically, as well as participate
in newsletter production; and capacity to work both as part of a team and
as an individual activist (while remaining in contact with the committee
for guidance and consent).

Appointments to the Committee are made by EQST, based on nominations and
phone interviews with prospective candidates. Interviewers will represent
EQST and the Committee. If you are interested in submitting your name for
consideration, please read and follow the instructions completely. We are
only accepting self-nominations, so, please, pass this announcement on to
others you think may have an interest in serving on the SC EJC.

Sierra Club of Canada members are not eligible to apply as per this
announcement. Please contact Barry Breau at [log in to unmask] or Elizabeth May
at [log in to unmask] for information on Canadian participation in these
committees.

DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF NOMINATIONS: SEPTEMBER 1, 2002

A copy of the completed application should be sent (email preferred) to
both members of the Search Committee:

ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE

The Sierra Club Environmental Justice Committee (SC EJC) is one of five
national Sierra Club issue committees that report to and advise the
Environmental Quality Strategy Team (EQST). The other committees are: Air,
Water, Waste, and Corporate Accountability. The SC EJC is responsible for
providing support and guidance to Club activists at all levels who are
attempting to deal with environmental justice issues, for encouraging
better communication among EJ advocates both inside and outside of the
Club, for helping to shape national Club policies and positions that have
environmental justice implications, for supporting the efforts of the
Environmental Justice Grassroots Organizing Program, and for assuring that
the Clubs historic commitment to the principles of environmental justice
is understood and sustained in all of the Clubs endeavors.

Ongoing efforts of the SC EJC involve (though they are not excluded to):
COMMUNICATION
    Newsletter; Website; List serv; Spanish Translation of Principles;
    Responding to EJ Inquiries
LEGAL/POLICY
501c3 Training; Case-by-case (address public participation, outreach,
etc.)
EJ PROGRAM
    In Gathering (coordinating at every level); Special Projects Fund;
Liaisonships to every site; Site Orientations
EJ TRAINING
EJ trainings (as individuals and through the SC Training Academy)
SC REPORTS
    SC National Priority Campaigns Survey

The current members of the SC EJC are:
* Phaedra C. Pezzullo (NC/IN) [Co-Chair]
* Kirstin Replogle (IL) [Co-Chair; will step down in Jan. 2003 due to
SC tenure policy and will become a SC volunteer Advisor to EJC]
* Terry Harris (MD) [Vice-Chair]
* Lydia Fischer (MI) [Member-at-large]
* Barbara Coman (LA) [liaison from the EQST]

Current Staff Advisors of the SC EJC:
* John McCown (GA) [liaison from the EJ Grassroots Organizing
Program; Co-Director of SC EJ Program]
* Jim Price (AL) [Co-Director of SC EJ Program]

For more information on serving as part of the SC EJC or about current
individual members, please feel free to visit the SC website or contact
us.
We strongly advise that any applicant review the SIERRA CLUB PRINCIPLES OF
ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE (Adopted by the Sierra Club Board of Directors,
February 2001) and the SIERRA CLUB PRINCIPLES OF ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE
GRASSROOTS ORGANIZING. Both are available on the Sierra Club website
(www.sierraclub.org; On the Home Page, search: environmental justice) or
we can send them to you upon request.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT

We encourage people of color, activists of all ages, and both rural and
urban activists to apply. Those that have experience as part of or working
with communities of color and/or economically disadvantaged communities
are especially encouraged apply, as are applicants who live west of the
Mississippi River.

Ability and willingness to use electronic mail and to participate in
conference calls (generally in the evening) are required. The SC EJ
Committee and EQST will attempt to assist a superior candidate who does
not have and cannot afford email access. Also, ability to travel
occasionally to meetings or conferences is helpful. (The travel and
lodging expenses of these trips are paid by the SC, generally.)

In evaluating nominations, the EQST strives to achieve diversity in
geography, ethnicity, and gender, to build closer connections with
grassroots leadership (which means that current or recent-past Chapter or
Group leadership is a plus), to expand the Club's influence (which means a
demonstrated ability to communicate with and motivate people external to
Sierra Club is a plus), and to increase our ability to communicate more
effectively within the Club about the issues and the accomplishments of
activists at all levels.
