SF 261, the Septic Tank Bill, passed last year in the Senate is
scheduled to come to floor debate in the Iowa House today. Please call
your Iowa State Representative today, and encourage him/her to support
SF 261. The alert below, originating from the Iowa Environmental
Council, has the details you need. You may discover your House member
by going to this weblink and using your ZIP code: http://www.legis.state.ia.us/FindLeg/

Then email her/him, or call at 515-281-3221.

Thanks for your effort and help. This issue is imminent today!

> An important water quality protection bill will be coming up for a
> vote this week-possibly as early as Thursday and your representative
> needs to hear that you want him/her to vote YES for the Septic Tank
> Inspection bill.
> Iowa has over 100,000 leaking septic tanks, despoiling our Iowa
> waters. Approximately 19 million gallons of untreated wastewater is
> discharged per day into Iowa waters from failing septic systems.
>
> There is a simple way to clean up this problem: require inspections
> of septic tanks when property is transferred. This solution has
> already been implemented successfully in 21 Iowa Counties and it is
> time to make these inspections a statewide requirement.
>
> If passed by our state legislature, Senate File 261 will require
> septic system inspections at the time of property transfer. If a
> system is found to be deficient, it must be brought into compliance
> with building codes prior to the completion of the transaction. This
> bill was overwhelmingly approved by the Senate last session and is
> before the House Environmental Protection Committee.
>
> Please call your Representative today and ask them to
> Vote YES for SF 261, the Septic Inspection bill
>
> We're told that some legislators fear imposing this cost to rural
> landowners. The alternative of course is passing on the cost to
> everyone else in the form of water despoiled by human sewage.
