For those of you interested in the Shimek Forest, Croton Unit and Belfast
Road issue, there is a meeting tomorrow (Sept. 18) at the site of the
proposed road project. Please let me know if you might be able to attend
this meeting to review the new proposal. I will be driving down from Des
Moines for this meeting.
Thanks,
Jane Clark

In response to the August NRC meeting, the Lee County Engineer has
surveyed a modification to the Belfast Road location in the vicinity of
the parking lot. A meeting has been scheduled (Sept. 18, 10:30 at the
parking lot by the stream) with the Engineer to review this option with the
DNR.

Lee County would like the NRC to reconsider action on the road and land
exchange at their October meeting. The road project and land exchange was
tabled at the DNR's NRC meeting in August.

For birdwatchers who might have visited Shimek Forest, Croton Unit, you
might recall the parking lot at the bottom of the hill. From approximately
this spot to the west, the county engineer plans to clear vegetation,
straighten the stream and move the road and widen the road from its existing
40 feet to a 170 foot right-of-way to the north. This r-o-w is about the
width of the Interstate r-o-w (fencerow to fencerow).

The Lee County Engineer has proposed to widen and regrade the road to make
it "safer for vehicles," while at the same time increasing the speed limit
to 45 mph.

This is a very lightly traveled and picturesque rural road. When asked,
has a study been done to determine the need for this widening, Lee County
reported an average daily traffic of only 130 vehicles (average 6 cars per
hour).
