September 9, 2008
GENTLE BREEZES FROM THE PRAIRIE WIND

TWO PROGRAMS THIS COMING SATURDAY:
1. Monarch Madness
2. Seeds of Success

This Saturday we will be tagging monarch butterflies. I would like to tell you that they have to be wrangled to the ground and hog-tied before branding, but the fact is that they actually get a numbered tag. If they are then found in Mexico after migration the numbers are recorded and flyways are recorded. Come out and participate in the roundup!

This Saturday will be a time of collecting seeds for Seeds of Success. Collecting will be on one of the native prairie sites on the refuge (I believe)

If you need background information on this project please see http://www.nps.gov/plants/sos/ (Copy and paste).

While the protocol may seem complicated, I think you will find it an interesting and valuable tool.

If you have not participated in the past don't let that stop you from joining us as we begin the seed collecting phase of the program.

I note that we have at least 11 bison calves this season, and two elk calves have been reported.

See you at the refuge,

Jonathan (Dances with Bison)
