Why you should vote for Gore

Subject: Excerpts from Gore speech

To: Club leaders
Fr: Carl

Attached are the environmental comments which were the backbone of
Vice-President Gore's speech which he delivered in Portland, Oregon,
Sunday
night. These comments constitute Gore's strongest commitment yet on
protecting
ancient forests, and give a clear sense of the differences between him
and
George Bush.

Nowhere are those differences clearer than on the issue of the
environment. For 24 years now, I've taken on the big polluters to fight

for clean environment. I held some of the earliest hearings on cleaning
up
toxic waste in our communities. I joined in some of the earliest fights
to
reverse the silent, rising tide of global warming.

And when it comes to the environment, I've never given up, I've
never
backed down, and I never will.

That's why I fought for tough, new clean air standards -- so our
children can get relief from the severe asthma too many of them suffer.

And I'm proud that we're protecting so much of our precious natural

land -- including Soda Mountain and Steen's Mountain here in Oregon.

Now, Governor Bush has a different commitment.

In this campaign, he's said he'll allow oil drilling in the Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge -- one of our greatest national treasures.
It would take years of development -- which would cause decades of
environmental damage -- to reap just a few months of increased oil
supply.

In Texas, he appointed a chemical company lobbyist to enforce the
state's environmental laws -- and made some environmental rules
voluntary.
Now Texas leads the nation in industrial pollution, and Houston has
become
the smog capital of the America.

So if you want Portland's skyline to look more like Houston's --

If you want oil drilling in our precious environmental treasures --

If you want to increase logging in national forests and roadless
areas --

Then maybe you ought to vote for my opponent.

But if you want a President who will work his heart out for clean
air,
clean water, and cleaner, more reliable energy -- then I need your help.

If you want a President who will support local communities as they

combat congestion and sprawl -- then I ask for your hard work.

If you want a President who will protect old growth forests for
generations to cherish, then I ask for your support.

If you believe, as I do, we should block new roads and timber sales
in
our roadless forests, so families can hike and play --

If you believe, as I do, that we have to restore the salmon, and
let
science -- not politics -- determine our course of action --

If you believe, as I do, that we should honor our bond through
treaty
and trust with our Native American tribes --

If you want to take serious steps to combat global warming, while
creating more jobs, not fewer jobs, for America -- then I need your
vote.
Because I want to fight for you.

That's just the beginning of what's at stake in this election.
