HYDRAULIC OIL SPILL CLOSES BOAT RAMP AT PRINCETON WILDLIFE AREA

PRINCETON – A broken hose on a pump resulted in hydraulic oil being spilled into a backwater of the Mississippi River at the Princeton Wildlife Area in Scott County. The south boat ramp will be closed while efforts are made to recover the hydraulic oil.

The pump was being operated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources when the hose ruptured. Booms to contain the oil were put in place and did prevent the oil from moving into the main channel of the river. The pump is used to raise and lower water levels of wetlands in the Princeton Wildlife Area.

It is estimated that approximately 50 to 100 gallons of oil were released. It is hoped the boat ramp can be reopened by sometime Wednesday afternoon.

For more information, contact DNR Conservation Officer Jeff Harrison at 563-349-9418.
