ALASKA TO KILL ABOUT 375 WOLVES:
The Alaska Board of Game approved a controversial wolf control plan
that calls for killing roughly three-fourths of the 500 wolves in the
Nelchina Basin of Alaska. The stated purpose of the killing is to
increase moose and caribou populations in the region for hunting.
According to the Anchorage Daily News (1/21), the board endorsed the
plan and then directed the state Department of Fish and Game to attempt
to gain public acceptance of the plan. Governor Tony Knowles has said
that he will not implement a wolf-kill program without broad public
support, which the department intends to gain through an aggressive
marketing campaign for the plan. The board also considered a plan to
kill black bears, but rejected the idea because of "the damage it does
