Public invited to Feb. 22 talk on electrical power resources

Iowa City, Iowa -- Headlines about the energy crisis in California have
made many Iowans wonder about Iowa's ability to meet growing utility
demands. People who want to learn about renewable and energy-efficient
opportunities for electrical power in the state and region are invited to
attend a free lecture on the topic at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, in the
basement meeting room of the First Christian Church located at 217 Iowa
Ave. in Iowa City. The event is sponsored by Environmental Advocates (EA).

Bill Leighty, an advocate of and businessman in renewable energy, will
present "Repowering the Midwest: A Clean Power Plan for the Electricity
Industry in the Heartland." Leighty describes the plan as a "blueprint for
developing a clean energy future for the electricity industry in 10
midwestern states," including Iowa. His talk will include a comparison of
the consequences of "doing business as usual" with the environmental
benefits, improved electric reliability and economic advantages of
developing and implementing new clean renewable energy technologies such as
wind power, biomass and solar photovoltaics (PV).

Leighty's presentation also will include a table-top hydrogen energy system
demonstration. The Leighty Foundation is helping lead the way in Iowa for
alternative energy with its support of I-Renew and a statewide tour of the
"Repowering the Midwest" report.

For more information, contact EA at 339-7828.
