In addition to the risk to non-target organisms like monarch butterflies,
researchers at New York University and Venezuelan Institute of Scientific
Investigations have recently discovered that the toxins produced by Bt corn
remain in the soil much longer than had previously been thought. Soil
bacteria destroy the toxin if they can get to it, but if the poison binds to
clay particles and humid acids, it can remain active for at least seven
months. Pollen falling on the ground and corn stocks plowed back into the
soil add to the toxin that the roots secrete. Researchers donıt know if
build-up would continue or level off.
³This potential risk deserves ongoing research,² says Lisa Lorenzen Dahl,
industrial liaison, ISU biotechnology. ³Iım confident that we can create
safe, effective, beneficial products through modern biotechnology
techniques.²
