Sierrans and Friends:
Below are 2 more LTEs on Energy which appeared in the Sunday Des Moines
Register, 8/24/03. Sorry I missed copying them earlier. Obviously we did not
work to generate the 1st one, I include it FYI. These actully preceded the
other 3, are either generated by our energy work in Iowa, or at least
capture some similar message. 6 LTEs in one great day for LTEs!
So send your letter now!

LTE #1
Blackout
The headlines say "BLACKOUT," and the pundits ask, "What is wrong with the
electrical-distribution system?" Perhaps they should be asking if the whole
East Coast, including New York City, is obsolete.

LTE #2
Since 1965 (the first large blackout that caused some concern), energy
demand and prices have risen. With a few exceptions in a few states, nothing
has been done to make the adjustments and revamp the outdated systems.
The money that could have been used for that has gone where? Space programs,
improving highways (in some places) and other government programs that were
not nearly as critical our domestic industrial demands, our economy and,
most important, human quality of life and our health.
It is ludicrous to see the billions spent on other government problems when
a part of those billions could be funneled into replacing and rebuilding the
backbone of our national power grid.
If we had wind generators in Iowa on large farms, we could produce a good
amount of power for Iowa. Other alternative sources of power have been
talked about and ignored.
When we have a power outage that affects a large part of the country and
causes people in many states to die from heat, cold and lack of food, maybe
the government (and the energy companies) will be embarrassed (or sued) into
doing what should have been started 30 to 35 years ago.
