Re: The 2004 Board of Directors Election
From: Barbara Postles, Chief Inspector

Date: March 1, 2004

There has been some confusion about the allowed uses of Club listservs for
posting messages about the Board of Directors election. This memo is to
clarify the rules for everyone.

Standing Rule 5-2-6.4 says, "Germane discussion of Board candidates (for
example discussing forestry aspects of a candidacy on a forestry list) may
take place on any . . . Club discussion list, subject to the usual rules of
the list and unless barred by the owner/sponsor of the list....The poster of
a message about a candidate shall send a copy of the message to the
candidate."

To reiterate, the message must, (1) follow the usual rules of the list, (2)
be allowed by the owner/sponsor of the list, and (3) must be sent by the
poster of the message to the candidates mentioned in the posting.

There is one listserv and two websites which are specifically set up to deal
with election issues:

(1) BOD-CANDIDATES-OPEN-FORUM is an interactive discussion list open to all
and only Sierra Club members for the free discussion of the qualifications
of candidates in the election. To join the forum
http://whistler.sierraclub.org/listsub/?listname=BOD-CANDIDATES-OPEN-FORUM&

(2) The Clubhouse website for Sierra Club grassroots leaders, includes a
section on Board Election 2004. Here you will find a Frequently Asked
Questions document, the Bylaws and Standing Rules that apply to Board
elections, and special information for newsletter editors. Sierra Club
grassroots leaders can access Clubhouse by going to:
http://clubhouse.sierraclub.org/

(3) and the Sierra Club's public website:
http://www.sierraclub.org/bod/2004election/ which contains information for
members about the election plus answers to key questions asked of all the
Board candidates.

As usual, if questions remain about a specific listserv posting we ask that
you contact the Inspectors before posting in order to avoid much time and
effort recalling a message that should not have been sent. Chief Inspector
Postles may be reached at [log in to unmask]

Thank you.
