Introduction to Fire Behavior and Fire Safety *
Whether you are interested in fire suppression or prescribed burns, the
same principles of fire behavior and fire safety apply. In addition to
these basic principles, Peter May and Jeffrey Learned will be bringing
a unique perspective on prairie/woodland restoration in a creative and
fun context. Upon course completion, we will be able to better manage
our own land with the appropriate use of fire and, for those who pass
the red card certification, go out on regional and
nationalNWCGWildfires.
Topics Covered:
Land stewardship and restoration utilizing prescribed fire
Attuning the individual to fire
Effect of fire on the ecosystem
Fire behavior and fire weather
Fire fighter safety, strategy and tactics
Use of tools, water, and firing devices
Schedule:
Thursday evening, Oct. 21, 2004: 6:00PM-9:30PM
Friday through Sunday, Oct. 22-24, 2004: 9:00AM-5:00PM
Sunday includes a prescribed burn, weather permitting, and an optional
physical fitness (red card) test for NWCG certification.

Camp sites are available at the park on a first come, first serve basis
($10/night with electrical, $7/night without). Cabins need to be
reserved ahead of time by calling Therese Cummiskey at 641-472-4421
($25/night for 2 or more nights; $35/night for one night only).
Course Fee: $150.00 by October 1, $175 after October
(includes all supplies and materials)
Due to enthusiastic response from the community and limited class size,
we highly recommend early registration.

Instructors: Peter May and Jeffrey Learned: Wildland
Firefighters/Restorationists and teachers of numerous S130/S190 classes.
Peter is a Baca Grande Fire Chief (inColorado), Fire Management
Officer, Ignition Specialist, Burn Boss Trainee, Engine Boss, Crew
Boss, Task Force Leader, with B.S. in Architecture and practicing as a
designer of natural architecture. Jeffrey is an Engine Boss, Class B
Sawyer, Incident Command Type 5, Crew/Squad Boss, Ignition Specialist,
Burn Boss Trainee and Firing Boss.
* This is the S130/190 required for certification as a National
Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Wildland Firefighter.

workshop to The Bioneers Conference (www.bioneers.org )
inFairfield,IA.Oct 15-17. Attendance at The Bioneers Conference is not
