GENETIC ENGINEERING COMMITTEE
The Sierra Club Genetic Engineering Committee (SC GEC) is one of six
national Sierra Club issue committees that report to and advise the
Sustainable Planet Strategy Team (SPST). The other committees are:
Agriculture, Global Warming and Energy, Sustainable Consumption, Global
Population and Environment, and Responsible Trade and Environment.
Strategy Teams appoint issue committees, supervise their budgets, and assist
them in developing and carrying out their work plans.
The SC GEC is responsible for providing support and guidance to Club
activists at all levels who are attempting to deal with genetic engineering
issues, for helping to shape national Club policies and positions on genetic
engineering issues (with particular reference to their environmental
dimensions), for encouraging further Club involvement with these issues, and
for communicating the Club's positions to the broad public, the media,
elected officials and regulatory agencies. This is a very active committee
which keeps up an e-mail dialogue. Scientific background or understanding
of the issues, planning and organizing skills, and communications skills
(writing, speaking) are important assets to doing our work. Enthusiasm and
commitment of time is also important. The GEC does not have paid staff.
CURRENT MEMBERS
Laurel Hopwood, R.N., Chair, Ohio
Neil Carman, Ph.D., Texas
Gillian Dale, Esq., Colorado
Jeffrey Smith, Iowa
Richard Shore, Ph.D., Kentucky
For more information on serving as part of the SC GEC or about current
individual members, please feel free to visit the SC website or contact us.
We strongly advise that any applicant review

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT
We encourage people of diverse ethnic backgrounds, and activists of all
ages, to apply.
Ability and willingness to use electronic mail and to participate in
conference calls are required. Also, ability to travel occasionally to
meetings or conferences is helpful. (The travel and lodging expenses of
these trips are paid by the Sierra Club.)
In evaluating applications, the SPST strives to achieve diversity in
geography, ethnicity, and gender, to build closer connections with
grassroots leadership (which means that current or recent-past Chapter or
Group leadership is a plus), to expand the Club's influence (which means a
demonstrated ability to communicate with and motivate people external to
Sierra Club is a plus), and to increase our ability to communicate more
effectively within the Club about the issues and the accomplishments of
activists at all levels.
