CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: SIERRA CLUB COMMUNICATION AND EDUCATION GOVERNANCE
COMMITTEE
The Board of Directors is soliciting nominations for 2 ? 3 volunteers to
serve on the Communication and Education Governance Committee (ComEd
GovCom). Completed nominations are due July 28, 2006.
NOMINATIONS
Send completed nominations, per these instructions, to Jennifer Ferenstein
and Susan Heitman.
Members will serve terms of two years. They will be expected to participate
in two conference calls a month, frequent e-mail communication, and an
annual face-to-face meeting.

chapter chair if that person is not one of your references.

INFORMATION ABOUT COMED GOVCOM:
MISSION: To further the Club?s conservation goals and to enhance its
organizational capacity, the Board of Directors charges the Communication
and Education Governance Committee to: (1) maximize the effectiveness of the
Club?s major communication vehicles; (2) enable the Club?s conservation
programs to enlist public support and engage a broad range of audiences; (3)
work with chapters and groups to improve internal and external
communications and; (4) elevate the ability and increase the capacity to
communicate at all levels of the Club.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide leadership to enable the Club to become a communication
organization in its programs and activities.
2. Develop and implement metrics for all of the Club?s major communication
vehicles at the national level, including Sierra Club Productions; Sierra
Club Books; publications, including Sierra magazine and The Planet;
electronic communications, including web site and various e-mail and other
electronic outreach technologies.
3. Collaborate with staff, volunteers and experts in various fields of
communication to ensure that the Club is on the cutting edge of
communication technologies, mediums and messaging.
4. Improve internal communication channels.
5. Assist chapters and groups in improving the effectiveness of their
external communications.
ComEd GovCom's 2006 goals:
* Provide leadership at all levels to enable the Sierra Club to become a
communications organization in its programs and activities. In particular,
work closely with the CICs to develop highly effective communications
strategies.
* Oversee the appointment of Grassroots Communications Chairs in as many
chapters as possible. Work with the Training GovCom and Communications staff
to develop training for the people in these positions, and good connections
with the national Communications staff in order to get our stories out as
widely as possible.
*Apply the standards for measurement of success developed this year to
additional communications channels, including The Planet and the Sierra Club
Website.
* Complete review of Internal Communications Audit, and report to the Board.
Appoint national-level committee(s) to work with staff on enhancing the
Club?s electronic communications capacities.
* Develop national-level training programs for chapter and group
communications volunteers, including training for newsletter editors and
webmasters. Work closely with the Training GovCom in this and other areas of
communications training.
* Revitalize the Environmental Education Committee by appointing a new chair
and developing a charge and work plan for this group.
* Build out one or more sub-committees (in cooperation with OEGC) to replace
the currently-inactive Information Technology Committee.
