Rivers Committee recruitment announcement
The Sierra Club's Rivers Committee is looking for a v olunteer to serve on
the committee and help advance the Club?s work on river related issues. The
Rivers Committee operates as part of the Wild Planet Strategy Team (WPST).
The committee currently has eight members and is looking for one more
volunteer to fill the seat held by Steve Glazer of Colorado, who has served
six years and must rotate off for at least a year under Club term limits.
The mission of the Sierra Club's Rivers Committee is to provide assistance
to other volunteers in addressing river issues, build networks of activists
working on these issues, and coordinate the Club's conservation efforts on
these issues. River issues can include, but are not limited to: water
rights, hydro re-licensing, riparian zone management, river restoration, dam
removal, dredging, locks, wild and scenic river management and designation
(both state and federal programs) and all related issues.
In order to carry out these objectives the Rivers Committee pursues the
following:
1. Developing an activist network and facilitating information exchange
among network members.
2. Keeping network members informed on legislation and agency policy matters
related to river issues.
3. Helping develop and implement strategy to deal with river issues from
defensive and proactive positions as appropriate, including raising the
visibility of river issues in the Club.
4. Developing contacts with other environmental and citizen's groups working
on river issues where such contacts would be helpful to activists and
further the Club's agenda.
Committee members need to be able to evaluate issues from a variety of
viewpoints. Committee business is conducted primarily via e-mail and
conference calls.
