CORPORATE ACCOUNTABILITY COMMITTEE: REQUEST FOR APPLICATIONS
The Environmental Quality Strategy Team (EQST) is seeking up to 4 new
members for its Corporate Accountability Committee (CAC). They are looking
for candidates with experience and/or expertise, plus a strong interest, in
the following areas:
* underlying sources of corporate power
* impact of exercising this power on the environment
* strategies for countering exercise of corporate power
* organizing/advocating around environmental issues
Service on the CAC requires a genuine commitment of time and energy.
Activists may have to give up some of their current commitments in order to
serve effectively as a committee member. For a better idea of the work of
the CAC, review the description of the committee below and the list of
qualifications for appointment that precede the application form. Also
visit www.sierraclub.org/cac
Applicants must be current Sierra Club members.
Selection of a new committee member will be based on several criteria,
including: enthusiasm for confronting corporate abuses of power and helping
to create an integrated program of corporate accountability in the Sierra
Club; commitment to remain active on the committee for at least two years;
ability to communicate effectively orally and electronically; and capacity
to work as part of a team.
Appointments to the Committee are made by EQST, based on the application and
phone interviews with candidates. Interviewers will represent EQST and the
Committee.
If you know of others who might be interested, please pass this announcement
on to them.
Sierra Club of Canada (SCC) members are not eligible to apply to this

CORPORATE ACCOUNTABILITY COMMITTEE
The Sierra Club Corporate Accountability Committee is one of eight national
Sierra Club issue committees that report to the EQST. The other committees
are: Air, Water, ZeroWaste, Toxics, Radiation, Livable Communities and
Environmental Justice. CAC activities include educational and activist
campaigns carried out by three Task Forces: Confronting Corporate Power,
Water Privatization, and Shareholder Action.
With three task forces in operation, the role of CAC is to:
1) provide oversight and guidance to the task forces
2) ensure strategic coordination among the task forces
3) look for new opportunities to build corporate accountability into
Club work
4) engage the Club more deeply in issues of corporate power
5) engage in and encourage networking at all levels - local, national,
international - to further enhance campaign knowledge, strategies,
effectiveness and solidarity around the complex and interrelated local and
global issues we aspire to address.
CAC members usually also serve on one of the task forces.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT
We encourage activists who have worked on corporate accountability issues at
any level to apply.
Ability and willingness to use electronic mail and to participate in
conference calls (generally in the evening) are required. Ability to travel
occasionally to meetings or conferences is helpful. (The travel and lodging
expenses of these trips are paid by the SC.)
In evaluating nominations, the EQST strives to achieve diversity in
geography, ethnicity, and gender; to build closer connections with
grassroots leadership (which means that current or recent-past Chapter or
Group leadership is a plus); to expand the Club's influence (which means a
demonstrated ability to communicate with and motivate people external to
Sierra Club is a plus), and to increase our ability to communicate more
effectively within the Club about the issues and the accomplishments of
activists at all levels.
