Official links poultry confinement to flu
But an industry representative says that the facilities actually make an
outbreak of the disease less likely.

Ames, Ia. - A national Humane Society official condemned the poultry
industry on Thursday for creating large confinements that he said could
create "the perfect storm" of conditions to spark a large-scale avian flu
pandemic.
Poultry industry representatives said the opposite is true - that
confinements make a disease outbreak less likely.

Efforts promote farm, neighbor relations
By KIRK LEEDS
IOWA VIEW
Columnist David Yepsen errs when writing that more livestock rules and
regulations are necessary because "voluntary efforts by producers haven't
been enough" ("Democrats Are Chicken on Hog Lots," March 11 Register).
We strongly disagree. Voluntary efforts to help Iowa's nearly 50,000
livestock farmers be environmental stewards, responsible neighbors and
successful business owners are alive and well in Iowa.
These efforts are having a tremendous impact thanks to the work of the
Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers. The organization was launched three
years ago by the Iowa Cattlemen's Association, Iowa Corn Growers
Association, Iowa Farm Bureau, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Poultry
Association and the Iowa Soybean Association. As a not-for-profit,
non-lobbying organization representing more than 225,000 farmers and Iowa
citizens, the coalition promotes and facilitates the responsible growth of
livestock farming and open communication between farmers and neighbors.
