Grassley pushes cap on farm subsidies

By PHILIP BRASHER
REGISTER WASHINGTON BUREAU

Washington, D.C. - Sen. Charles Grassley is trying to use a Democratic
budget plan to tighten limits on government payments to farms.

The Iowa Republican told the Senate on Wednesday that farmers face losing
urban support for agricultural subsidies unless Congress reduces the amount
of money that individual operations can collect.

Biofuel proposals get tax breaks
2 northern Iowa counties OK incentives for plants

By JERRY PERKINS
REGISTER FARM EDITOR

Harvest BioFuels, a Texas-based company that wants to build three ethanol
plants in northern Iowa, has received more than $11 million in property tax
abatements from Kossuth and Hancock counties because, its chief executive
officer says, the tax breaks are needed to attract investors.

State tax credits of more than $24 million also were approved last month for
the proposed ethanol plants in Kossuth and Hancock counties by the Iowa
Department of Economic Development board through its High Quality Jobs
Creation program.
