1.	Public asked to attend meeting on improving McLoud Run, Iowa's
only urban trout stream

PUBLIC ASKED TO ATTEND MEETING ON IMPROVING MCLOUD RUN, IOWA'S ONLY
URBAN TROUT STREAM

CEDAR RAPIDS - Iowans interested in improving Iowa's only trout
stream can attend a public meeting and review a DNR improvement plan for
the stream.

The DNR has developed a water quality improvement plan for McLoud Run,
a spring-fed stream located in the heart of Cedar Rapids. The stream has
water conditions cold enough to support a trout population year-round.
However, McLoud Run landed on the state's impaired waters list after a
fish kill in August 2001. Heat shock caused the fish kill when a rapid
rise in water temperature stressed the trout. The rise in temperature
came from rain water that fell on hot roofs, parking lots and paved
areas, and then ran into the stream.

The DNR will ask Iowans for their input on the improvement plan at the
meeting, to be held May 2 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cedar Rapids Water
Department. The meeting will take place in the water department's
north conference room, located at 1111 Shaver Rd. NE.

"McLoud Run is a unique resource for the people of Cedar Rapids, and
we need their help to make it a healthier stream," said Joe Herring,
with the DNR's Watershed Improvement section. "The input of Cedar
Rapids residents is very important to us, as they're the ones who know
and use the stream."

The DNR's water quality improvement plan, also called by its
technical name of Total Maximum Daily Load, outlines the problems and
potential solutions to the problems in McLoud Run. After gathering
Iowans' comments, the DNR will forward the final plan to the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency for approval. Local groups interested in
helping McLoud Run can then use the plan to assist their improvement
efforts.
