Recreation Issues Committee -- Request for Applications

The Wild Planet Strategy Team (WPST) seeks to appoint up to three new
members of the Club's national Recreation Issues Committee (RIC). If you
would like
to apply for membership on RIC, please complete the application below.
ABOUT THE RECREATION ISSUES COMMITTEE (RIC)
RIC's mission is to assist volunteers, build networks and help coordinate
the Club's conservation efforts on recreation issues. Recreation issues
include but are not limited to: motorized recreation (ORVs, motorcycles,
ATVs, snowmobiles, jet-skis, etc), use conflicts, noise impacts, park
overflights, bicycles, trails, appropriate and accessible recreation,
visitor impacts and resource protection needs related to recreation
(including protection of Wilderness resources), recreation fees,
commercialization and privatization of recreation on public lands. RIC's

Continuing members of RIC are: Roz McClellan (Chair, Colorado), Phil Knight
(Montana), Tom Martin (Secretary, Arizona), Brian Scherf (Vice Chair,
Florida), Dan Schroeder (Utah) and Terry Weiner (California). Staff
liaison is Myke Bybee (Washington DC). Outings liaison is Vicky Hoover
(San Francisco). WPST liaison is Karl Forsgaard (Washington State). RIC
also has corresponding members and Advisors.
ABOUT THE WILD PLANET STRATEGY TEAM (WPST)
WPST is one of four Strategy Teams that report to the Club's Conservation
Governance Committee, which is directly responsible to the Board of
Directors for all of the Club's issues work. Appointed by the Conservation
Governance Committee, WPST is responsible for the Club's wildlands-related
issues work. They help to shape Club policies and positions, recruit and
apply necessary expertise, assist grassroots activists, and focus Club
resources where they can produce the best results.
To carry out its responsibilities, WPST administers ten national issue
committees, the Canyons of the Colorado River; Forest Certification;
Grazing; Marine Wildlife and Habitat; National Forest Protection and
Restoration; National Parks and Monuments; Recreation Issues; Rivers;
Wildlands; and Wildlife and Endangered Species Committees.
ABOUT COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS & MEMBER RESPONSIBILITIES
Applicants must be current Sierra Club members. Desired qualifications
include experience and expertise on recreation issues, as well as a broad
perspective on other related issues, such as impacts on public lands and
waters, including National Parks, Wilderness, and Wild Rivers. Applicants
should offer a record of past volunteer involvement with Sierra Club, good
management, communication and social skills, capacity to work both as part
of a team and as an individual activist, and commitment to remain active on
the committee for at least two years.
Ability and willingness to use email and to participate in RIC's regular
monthly conference calls (generally in the evening) are required, as well
as the ability to travel occasionally to meetings or conferences. The
Committee usually meets at least once a year to identify major upcoming
recreation issues of interest, plan activities, and finalize a Committee
work plan for the upcoming year. Members are expected to attend this
annual meeting (travel and lodging are reimbursed).
Appointments to RIC are made by WPST, based on applications and phone
interviews with prospective candidates by WPST and RIC representatives. If
you are interested in applying, please read and follow the instructions
completely. We are only accepting self-nominations, so please pass this
