I was on part of RAGBRAI this year. I had friends that were on the
complete route. We both took an interested in seeing how the Cities
along the route handled recycling of the many containers used by
people on RAGBRAI. The only over night town that made any effort
about recycling was Council Bluffs. The Council Bluffs Department
Public Health Solid Waste Management division placed a recycling
container by every trash can and that was one heck of a lot cans.
They applied for a grant to obtain recycling containers. They did
receive the grant. They also employed young people to police the
RAGBRAI site and to keep an eye on the recycle containers. All the
collected recyclable materials were sent to the CB waste management
site to be sorted and then sold to recycling companies. None of the
other cities in Iowa came even close to their effort.
How can the CB waste management people be nominated for a Sierra Club
award. Thanks
