An important flaw in the Governor's reasoning (and in many others,' not necessarily by political party) is the willingness to clean up a mess after it has occurred, probably at public expense, without also promoting a preventive mindset and policy. Sure, praise the wastewater workers for keeping us safe - they are essential - but this is the pound of cure, not the ounce of prevention. Small government and bigger corporate benefits, the currently dominant ideology, are actually helped by prevention, although the short-term costs would be high to switch from the damage-control and damage-denial mentality we have to the more genuinely conservative/cautious approach of prevention.

That, for me, is the worm in the apple of the current breed of political conservatism.

(PS: The current round of political posturing could put the Onion out of business! Which is more laughable?)

We need a reply exposing the Governor's true positions. Exploiting sewer workers with a publicity stunt at a wastewater treatment plant while at the same time working to undermine the clean water regulations.... Where's the Onion when we need 'em?

Governor's Proclamation: Wastewater and Water Workers of Iowa Week

An event is planned for Thursday, July 28th, at 10:00 a.m., at the Ames Wastewater Treatment Plant, where the Governor will sign a proclamation for "Water and Wastewater Workers of Iowa Week." The proclamation will read, in part, "Recognizing that the State of Iowa's wealth of natural resources has been threatened by the degradation of surface and ground waters, the Water and Wastewater workforce of Iowa have dedicated themselves to applying environmental passion and science to enhance drinking and recreational waters of Iowa." For further information, see the Iowa Water Environment Association's website: http://www.iawea.org/ <http://www.iawea.org/> .
