Friends of Utah Wilderness,

Following is an announcement of some exciting upcoming environmental
events in Iowa that I'll hope you'll be able to support through your (and
as many of your friends and colleagues) attendance and enthusiasm. If you
are a duplicate on this list, my apologies. Please reply if you feel
you're already getting this information and you're address will be removed.

The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance is one of many environmental
organizations coming to Iowa in order to protect our remaining wild places,
and the current threat to Utah's Basin and Range and Mojave ecosystems is a
whopper. Led by powerful Utah Rep. Jim Hansen, chairman of the
Subcommittee on Parks and Public Lands, his recently introduced H.R. 3035
designates just 40%, 1 million acres, of qualifying wilderness lands for
western and southwestern Utah. The alternative, supported by the 176
member group Utah Wilderness Coalition, and as outlined in a citizen's
proposal is America's Redrock Wilderness Act H.R. 1732, supported by 156
House members, and designates all 2.6 million qualifying acres in the
region. The problem: Secretary Babbitt has given the administration's
support to the low acreage bill and we're encouraging the Vice President to
correct his Secretary's wayward ship.

Some of you have been following the Utah wilderness issue for quite some
time while others may be less familiar. Anyone seeking a brief summary of
Rep. Hansen's HR 3035, the "wilderless" bill against western Utah, please
refer to the bottom of this message.

What we need are bodies, plain and simple. Coming up very soon, on the
8th and on the 12th of January are two opportunities to help Utah
wilderness, and more generally help raise awareness about the environment.
Both of these events will take place in the greater Des Moines area. The
debate on the 8th will be at the studios of IPTV in Johnston. This gives
us an opportunity to be visual with our 25' "Protect Wild Utah" banner on a
night when most local press will present. Unfortunately, the taping will
occur at 1:00 pm during the day, so if you can attend, please reply to this
message now so we can count heads.

The information below gives the details of the environmental demonstration
on the 12th where there will be many more people attempting the put the
environment in the national spotlight. Once again, please reply if you can
attend.

Thank you,
Dave Pacheco
