Job Date: 02/00 Job No: H8045B Category: 04 Union: (SEA) FLSA: Exempt FTE: 1.0 Job Description Title: Senior Associate Editor Dept: Sierra Magazine Reports To: Editor-In-Chief, Sierra Context: Responsible for timely, accurate and appropriate written coverage of diverse topics for Sierra magazine. Scope: The Senior Associate Editor collaborates with Sierra staff, Club staff, volunteers, and outside contacts to gather information on various topics and prepare written pieces for publication in Sierra. Job Activities: 1. Writes and edits Sierra material, producing features as well as smaller items. 2. Takes primary responsibility for one or more editorial departments, which includes planning, selecting authors, establishing deadlines and achieving editorial quality standards. 3. In collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief and Senior Editors, assigns articles. Determines appropriate deadlines for assigned pieces. 4. Consults with Sierra art and production staff regarding graphic presentation of articles. 5. Establishes and maintains contacts with sources to monitor relevant issues, trends, and activities. 6. Performs miscellaneous duties as directed. Overtime Disclosure: Periodic overtime is required to meet magazine and project deadlines. Project-related overtime will rarely exceed 5 hours weekly, or 20 hours on a monthly basis. Knowledge & Skills: -- Excellent writing and communication skills, demonstrated by published articles and other materials. -- Excellent editing skills and the ability to work with authors. -- 3+ years' experience in writing and editing for periodicals. -- Demonstrated familiarity with authors and conventions in the fields of nature writing and environmental reporting. -- Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications or related field or the equivalent combination of education and journalism/writing experience.
