Subject: Special Outings for Wildlands Preservation!

WESTERN WILDERNESS NEEDS YOU!

This year, the Sierra Club's National Activist Outing Program proudly
offers
three special trips designed to complement our national conservation
priority
campaign on Wildlands Protection -- three trips that focus on achieving
permanent protection for wildlands in Nevada, Montana, and Utah. If you
want to
be part of the action on the Sierra Club's wildlands protection campaign,
but
want to have fun, good exercise, and magnificent scenic surroundings at the
same
time, one of these trips is for you! Choose from car camping in Nevada,
backpacking in Montana, or mountain biking in Utah.

Trip 101A: Nevada's Black Rock Desert/High Rock Canyon: May 28 to June 3,
2000.
The obscure northwest corner of Nevada has just become a sizzling
political hot
potato as Nevada's two senators stand on the verge of introducing
legislation to
establish a National Conservation Area. Will it include wilderness? The
area's
rugged canyons and broad desert playas offer our camp camping trip a superb
"classroom" for a fascinating primer on natural and human history blended
with
politics. Trip leader Carol Tresner provides two base camps in this scenic,
historic but remote part of our country's most mountainous state. You can
help
put little-known Nevada on the public's wilderness map! With guidance from
local
wilderness activists, learn how to become a key advocate for this and other
major Nevada wildland preservation issues. Price: $445.

Trip 105A: Montana Wilderness: how much is enough? August 13-19, 2000. The
northern Rockies ecosystem contains some of the country's most
extraordinary yet
unprotected lands. Guided by leader Roger Grissette, you'll learn about
wilderness proposals for unprotected roadless areas and the need for
biological
corridors to connect criticial protected areas. The Kootenai National
Forest
and the Flathead National Forest serve as bases for this outing's two
separate
short backpack jaunts, that show both problems of over-exploitation of
forest
resourcs and the magnificent, still pristine resources worth fighting for.
The
famed Yaak River Valley and Swan Valley will be focal high points, connected
by a
car shuttle, and knowledgeable Montana wilderness activists will help
guide.
Price: $395.

Trip 106A: Book Cliffs Bicycle Odyssey, Utah. Sept. 2 -9, 2000. Leaders
Vicky
Hoover and Jim Catlin guide this mountain bike trip riding on remote dirt
roads
that form the boundaries of proposed wilderness in the remote Book Cliffs
of
eastern Utah. We'll penetrate the imposing ramparts of the dazzling Book
Cliffs
escarpment to the hinterland. Hhere, abundant wildlife, spaciouis
vastness, and
an austere rugged beauty make the Book Cliffs one of the most important
areas
included in the 9.1. million-acre Citizens Wilderness proposal for Utah's
Bureau
of Land management public lands. Become part of the nationwide campaign
for
Utah wilderness while enjoying moderate cycling in the East Tavaputs
Plateau
portion of the Book Cliffs. Lofty plateaus and intricate canyons are the
backdrop for our vehicle-supported venture. Price: $425.

Sign up today for one of these great opportunities to blend conservation
activism with enjoyment of nature in beautiful surroundings. Maybe your
Chapter
wants a task force on Western Wilderness, and needs you to take the lead by
enjoying one of these outings as a start-up action! Some Chapters may be
able
to help financially if you become an official Chapter issue representative.
There are also partial scholarships for applicants for whom cost is a
deterrent.
