Howdy,
Here is updated info for the Iowa City Area Group of the Sierra Club's
Earth Week events. Just as a reminder, it is the 30th Annual Earth Day
this year. The Big Three Oh!
On Sunday, April 16th, we will have an Earth Week Service
Outing. We will be doing prairie restoration work out at
Finkbine Prairie. Please give Doug Jones a call and volunteer a couple
of hours to help get this years restoration efforts underway. Call
Doug Jones at 338-2879. You could also call Rex Bavousett at 626-7862
if Doug's phone is busy.
On Saturday, April 22nd we will have an Earth Day Hike at
MacBride Recreation Area. We will hike the Osprey Trail along
Coralville Reservoir and up to the spillway waterfall of MacBride Lake.
This hike will be around 9:30 and will be lead by Heidi Nobiling. You
can contact her for details on where to meet by calling 338-0064.
Our Earth Day Program on Saturday will be presented by Dr.
Diana Horton, Associate Professor of Botany at the University of Iowa.
Topic: "I Thought I Had Come to a Botanical
Desert...."
The program will be about Native Plants of Iowa. This is of special
concerns to us here in Iowa since our State Government is currently
considering revising the Endangered and Threatened Species list in
Iowa. This action would lower the listings from 229 to 13 species.
This program will help illustrate why it was so important for the Iowa
Chapter of the Sierra Club to fight and protect the Eddyville Dunes
near Ottumwa.
Location/Time: Room "A" at the Iowa City Public Library
on Saturday, April 22nd. We will have the room from 1:45 to 3:30. The
program could begin at 2:00 p.m. and run to 3:00. If we need more time
for Questions and Answers we will then have till 3:30.
Please pass on this information to all you know who would be interested
in attending. This event will be listed in the Iowa Chapter paper, but
missed being listed in the Iowa City Sierran. For more information
please contact Rex at 626-7862.
Thanks,
Rex Bavousett
