Iowa News & Views "Current Events Television" Advocates: Proposed utility deregulation will hurt consumers, small businesses A proposed electrical utility deregulation bill will weaken environmental protections and raise rates for consumers and small businesses, say two state officials in the new edition of the "Iowa News & Views" cable television series, which appears the weeks of March 13, and March 20 throughout the state. Gary Stewart, consumer advocate in the Iowa Attorney General's office, and David Osterberg, environmental consultant to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, discuss deregulation with host Joe Bolkcom. If passed by the General Assembly and signed into law, the mammoth deregulation bill would allow electrical utilities to compete directly against one another for residential, commercial and industrial customers. Critics fear competition will result in higher rates for residential and small business customers and weakened environmental protection. "Iowa News & Views" is a 30-minute program featuring information and discussion of state and community issues, and airs each week on cable systems serving 500,000 homes.
